Not only is falafel delicious and satisfying, but it is also vegan, making it a great option for plant-based eaters. In this recipe, we will be showing you how to make vegan falafel from scratch at home. The process is easy and the result is a crispy, flavorful falafel that is perfect for a quick snack or a light meal. So let's get started!

  • 1 cup dried chickpeas, soaked overnight and drained
  • 1/2 small onion, roughly chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, roughly chopped
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 1/2 tsp chili flakes (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • Oil for frying

  1. In a food processor, pulse the chickpeas, onion, garlic, parsley, cilantro, cumin, coriander, chili flakes (if using), salt, and lemon juice until well combined and a rough paste forms.
  2. Add the flour to the chickpea mixture and pulse a few more times until everything is well combined.
  3. Heat a few inches of oil in a large pot or deep fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  4. Using your hands, shape the falafel mixture into small balls or patties.
  5. Carefully place a few falafels into the hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes.
  6. Remove the falafels from the oil with a slotted spoon and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
  7. Repeat with the remaining falafel mixture.
  8. Serve the falafels in pita bread with lettuce, tomato, and your choice of vegan sauces. Enjoy!
